Copyright Website Proposes Open "Tag & Track"
Strategy over Proprietary DRM at National Association of Broadcasters Conference
FOSTER CITY, CA - September 5, 2001 - Copyright Website will be
discussing new developments and strategies for Digital Rights Management at NAB
2001 Xstream and Radio show at 10:30am, at the Morial Convention Center in New
Orleans, Louisiana.
The Copyright Website will be represented by Benedict O'Mahoney, President
of Copyright Website LLC . "As more content is delivered through the
Internet, content providers and distributors are increasingly concerned about
protection of intellectual property," said Mr. O'Mahoney. "They are faced with
increasingly urgent, complex and potentially expensive strategic decisions
about which protection strategy to pursue."
The three major technologies emerging in this space are: 1) digital rights
management; 2) digital watermarking; and 3) on-line tracking. Recent cases
involving digital rights management strategies such as CSS and SDMI have
revealed unexpected vulnerabilities in digital rights management technology.
Conversely, recent crackdowns by the MPAA on Internet distribution of pirated
DVDs have been the result of unexpected strengths of on-line tracking
technologies.
"Judicial and political forces are currently in play which may ultimately
affect a content provider's protection strategy," according to Mr. O'Mahoney.
"It is possible that the Digital Millennium Copyright Act will be revisited. It
is conceivable that such a re-visitation could result in the excise of the copy
control circumvention provision of the Act, which would remove a substantial
legal hammer currently wielded by digital rights management technology."
Combined with low consumer tolerance for less-than-CD quality or finicky
streaming media, digital rights management schemes may face a technical and
political dead end. Meanwhile, the increasing sophistication of on-line
tracking technologies, when combined with digital watermarking technologies,
may provide an effective intellectual property protection scheme that is
acceptable to content provider and consumer alike.
NAB Xstream, as part of the National Association of Broadcasters Radio
convention, is the first event to bridge the gap between traditional content
delivery and new, rich media content exchange. NAB Xstream is a technology show
where streaming techniques and content development are explored from the
inside-out. The conference builds on the assets and know-how of broadcasters in
the context of new Internet business.
